Roger Ebert, a film critic, wrote that Bruckner was able to perform the challenging role completely with conviction. Bruckner has been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for "Best female lead" in this part. She was brought up with two brothers and one sister. Her routine was to learn Hungarian to maintain her proficiency. Bruckner was an actress from California in Hollywood, being born of Hungarian parents and Russian mothers, who divorced. The paternal grandparents of Bruckner were German. In Hungary the parents of Bruckner first met, and later immigrated to America in 1984, via the refugee settlement of Italy. She is the sister of two brothers and is the mother of two more sisters.
